Larimar is a rare form of blue Pectolite that formed when ancient volcanoes erupted in the Dominican Republic. After spending an eternity tucked away in the crevices of the Bahoruco Mountains, it is believed an earthquake dislodged fragments of the blue Pectolite, sending them tumbling down to the sea by way of the the Rio Baoruco.

Today, artisan miners dig several hundred feet deep into the earth—sometimes spending years before discovering a new vein of Larimar which they carefully extract using small tools and pickaxes.
